The Understory

Powder Cleanser 101: How to Use One (and Why We Put Reishi in Ours)

A powder cleanser is a face wash with no water in the bottle. You shake about half a teaspoon into a wet palm, add a splash of water, and it turns into a soft, creamy lather that you use like any other cleanser. Because the formula is dry until that moment, it needs no preservatives, and you decide how strong it is by how much water you add.

The bottle lives beside our sink. Not tucked in a cabinet, not buried in a drawer. Beside the sink, because the first thing it does every morning is smell like something good is baking.

Warm oats. Toasted coconut. That is the entire scent, and nothing was added to create it. No perfume, no fragrance oil, no “clean vanilla” accord. It is simply what oat flour and coconut milk powder smell like when you hold them close to your face. The scent is the ingredients.

How does a powder cleanser work?

The formula sits in the bottle fine and silky and completely stable. It only becomes a cleanser when it meets water. Rub your palms together and it turns into a low, milky lather rather than the squeaky foam of a gel.

How do you use a powder cleanser, step by step?

  1. Dampen your face and one palm. Warm water, not hot.
  2. Shake about half a teaspoon into the damp palm. Less than you think. This is the step everyone overshoots on the first try.
  3. Add a splash of water and swirl until the powder turns into a soft, creamy lather.
  4. Massage onto a damp face for 30 seconds. No scrubbing. The kaolin does the lifting.
  5. Rinse, and follow with a face oil while your skin is still slightly damp. Oil can only hold in water that is already there, which is the whole argument of Face Oil vs. Moisturizer.

You control the strength. More water gives you a gentler, milkier cleanse. Less water gives you a richer lather with a little more polish from the oat flour. One tip from our own sink: keep the lid on and your fingers dry when you pour. A powder only stays a powder while water stays out of the bottle.

Why does a waterless cleanser not need preservatives?

Bacteria and mould need available water to grow. The moment a formula contains water, it has to be protected with a preservative system and the rest of the supporting cast that keeps a liquid safe on a shelf for years. Take the water out and that requirement largely disappears, which is why Reishi Reset has no preservatives in it at all. The formula gets to be shorter, and nothing is slowly breaking down in water between the day it was blended and the day you open it.

The practical upsides come free. A 40 g bottle lasts about two months of daily use, because half a teaspoon of concentrated powder goes further than a pump of something that is mostly water. Nothing leaks in a suitcase. And powders are not subject to the 100 ml carry on liquid limit.

Does the pH of a cleanser matter?

More than most people realise. A 330 person study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science estimated that the natural surface pH of skin sits around 4.7, slightly acidic, and found that skin below pH 5 measured better for moisture and scaling than skin above it. Bar soap usually lands around pH 9 or 10, and even plain tap water nudged skin pH up for hours in that study.

That is why we built the lather on sodium cocoyl isethionate (SCI), a mild cleansing agent made from coconut fatty acids, instead of soap or sodium lauryl sulfate. SLS is so reliably harsh that dermatology researchers use it on purpose when they need to irritate skin in a study. SCI is the classic base of gentle syndet bars, cleansers that clean without the high pH of soap.

What does each ingredient in Reishi Reset actually do?

  • Colloidal oat: the base of the formula and half of that bakery smell. Finely milled oat holds water against the skin and leaves a soft, comfortable feel after rinsing.
  • Niacinamide: the most researched ingredient in the bottle. In a 2002 trial in the British Journal of Dermatology, a 5% niacinamide moisturizer visibly evened skin tone after four weeks compared with the same moisturizer without it. To be straight with you, that was a leave on cream, and a cleanser is rinsed off after 30 seconds. Here it plays a supporting role in how even and bright your skin looks over time.
  • Reishi mushroom: the ingredient the product is named for. It is whole ground mushroom, which brings reishi’s polysaccharides and antioxidants into the lather. The same honesty applies: most reishi research is lab work, which we unpack in What Does Mushroom Skincare Actually Do?
  • Coconut milk powder: softens the feel of the lather, and carries the other half of the scent.
  • Kaolin clay: a soft white clay that lifts the day off your skin without scrubbing. No grit, no beads, no abrasion.
  • SCI: the gentle foam, explained above.

It is vegan and cruelty free, with no SLS, no parabens and no added fragrance. The full list: Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Maranta Arundinacea Root Powder, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Milk Powder (and) Maltodextrin, Tapioca Starch, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Kaolin, Niacinamide, Ganoderma Sichuanense (Reishi) Powder, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Fruit Extract. Nine ingredients. That is the whole formula.

Who is a powder cleanser for?

Cleansing is where most routines quietly go wrong. It is the step that strips, the step that leaves your cheeks tight for twenty minutes afterwards, the step people then try to fix with more product further down the shelf.

Here is the position we would defend: if your face feels tight after you wash it, change the cleanser before you add anything else. A mild, low pH cleanse is the cheapest upgrade in skincare, whoever makes it. Powder formats suit sensitive and dry skin especially well because you can dial the strength down with more water.

Who makes Reishi Reset, and where?

Every bottle is hand blended in small batches in Victoria, BC, by a mother and son team. Angele started the company at her kitchen counter, and you can read how it began here. Small batches are the reason the ingredient list is nine items long instead of thirty, and the reason the scent is oats and coconut instead of something engineered to smell like them.

If you want to try it, Reishi Reset is the cleanser this post is about.

Frequently asked questions

How much powder cleanser should I use?

Shake about half a teaspoon per wash into a damp palm and mix it with a splash of water. A 40 g bottle of Reishi Reset lasts roughly two months of daily use.

Is a powder cleanser good for sensitive skin?

Yes. It is one of the gentlest formats there is. Because the formula contains no water, it needs no preservatives, and you control how strong the lather is by how much water you add.

Does a powder cleanser remove makeup?

It handles light makeup and daily buildup well. For heavy or waterproof makeup, use an oil based first cleanse, then follow with the powder as your second cleanse.

Can I take a powder cleanser in my carry on?

Yes. Powders are not subject to the 100 ml carry on liquid limit, which makes powder cleansers ideal for flying.

How long do I massage it in?

About 30 seconds on a damp face, then rinse. There is no need to scrub, because the kaolin clay lifts the day off without any abrasion.
